Critical to that performance is the PGB, which has a planetary design and can transmit more power than an entire grid of Formula 1 cars when running at maximum power. On test it has delivered 87,000 horsepower or 64 megawatts – enough to power a medium-sized city. This is for a component of a jet engine and as it's a press release I would think I am meant to be able to comprehend it. |

Odd, because I thought transmission of power was a bit of a weakness for a planetary gearbox. Could be wrong.

I thought the main weakness for planetary gearboxes is that 99% of cycle mechanics don't understand them. And I certainly don't.

I had a planetary gear in the bottom bracket of a recumbent trike, activated with the heel. It was very weird to see the chainring rotating at a different speed to the pedals. Luckily, I never had to ask a bike shop to service it

I’ve got hub gears on my 2009 Brompton M3L. If they ever go wrong I suspect I’ll just buy a new wheel.

I want to see a video of that what Steve just described. Trying to imagine it is making my brain hurt.

I never had any idea how the gears worked on my first bikes (Sturmey-Archer) but it was rumoured that if you tried to take one apart, powerful springs would as good as make an explosion and it was impossible to put back together again. I also had no idea what 'planetary' meant in the excerpt I first posted on this topic until I followed Glenn's link. So now I know two new things. |

um
My first bike, given to Dad from a 'bloke at work' back in about 1968 or '69, had a 4-speed Sturmey Archer hub planetary gear. Which didn't work, which was why he was giving it away. The first thing Dad made (and helped) me do was to take it apart, clean it, grease it etc and put it back together. No explosion Chris, and although fiddly, no great issue. Other than lots of parts and no web to look up in those days. Lasted me through my school and uni days till well into the late 70s. Although the first gear was a pig and the gear change cable had to be tuned and set with a fraction of a millimetre to get it to work. |
