I did manage to jog-walk a 5km, so with rest (just walking) between now and the 23rd I should make the start-line.

And it sounds daft for a flat-lander but I'm not worried about the ascents at all.

It is the descents I fear... especially the first one from Walna Scar pass, after the Dockray checkpoint down to Dockray on the road and the utter bastard that is Gatesgarth.

Don't think anyone's knees look forward to the descents. Think it's more of a 'manage the effort ' approach in the early stages so you don't wreck your legs for the latter stages.

Absolutely, Stoosh. That is bang on. The course punishes any early exuberance.

I'm aiming for very controlled sensible hiking pace with the occasional jog if it suits - no mad dashing downhill here

My run on the 50 2 years ago was down to pacing. I lost 5 weeks of training due to injury so has to be very sensible with the effort levels. Even so I was probably on the edge for the last 20 miles.
It’s. or about staying within yourself, but knowing how hard you can push it.

Going through the mandatory kitlist. Have a new first aid kit on order that should be delivered tomorrow.

Then it is just the emergency food rations, for me that will be two bars of a four pack of Mars/Snickers/Bounty/etc. And a pack of paracetmol.

I've tried and tested wearing a race pack coupled with waist pack. That lets me carry everything I need, with the added bonus everything that I need regularly is easy to hand.

I'd echo the 'be careful' in the early stages bit. A couple of times I've had fun on the descent from Walna Scar, and then started the first climb in leg 2 and wondered why my quads were sore!

I think it's a year for breaking rules. I think I'll be starting in shorts I've never done more than 15 miles in, new shoes, and with a pair of poles*. Not particularly happy with this, but with no chance in the last 12 months to test these things on long runs it'll just have to be.

* not very happy about taking poles as it really doesn't feel right to me (more than happy that others do though) but I think given the lack of preparation I need to be pragmatic and give my body a chance of getting around.
