So my PT is on paternity leave and the guy who does the bootcamp class 3 times a week and is also a PT done my session yesterday. I felt like I got so much more out of the session with him. Constant feedback on form and encouragement. It makes things a bit a awkward now as I'd prefer to train with him but I still like the other guy. Replacement PT took me off the bar for upright row as he saw my core wasn't strong enough to enable me to hold good form. We played around with a few things and settled on the pulley machine with 30kg. He got me to concentrate on really 'rounding' my shoulders back and holding the tension on the way back as well and just 'letting go' right at the end. Boy are those muscles sore today. My decline tricep dips he gave me more pointers on and I feel a lot happier with. My decline pull ups were good no correction needed just bloody hard still. A accidentally picked up the heaviest kettle bell (16kg I think) for my goblet squats but smashed them. My deadlifts need to be changed as he could tell they were too easy but I'm not happy on the bar. He's said we don't need to use the bar and will come up with something. I actually slept on the sofa in the afternoon yesterday which is unheard of for me 😮 I_W very flattering and wow to those weights! |

Yay! I don't think it is awkward really, if you work well with someone there is nothing wrong with that

It's tricky EB. Both guys sound good. Happens all the time though, at all levels. That's why pro athletes change coaches! I've felt it too - someone new notices different things and seems to have all the solutions. And it's hard to make up your mind what to do - loyalty to an old coach/trainer/mentor whatever allied to the fact that they presumably know you, the way your body works and the way you think - against the chance of new improvements and solutions - and just the excitement of change.... Having said all that it sounds like a bloody great session! |

Yesterday my coach said he could see the strength gains I've made working on my own in the gym twice a week for a month. I was pleased because I have given up one of my precious track sessions - it's two gym two track each week for me ATM - hope to keep roughly to that 'til Christmas.

It is difficult EB, but you do need to do what's best for you - it may well be just a fresh set of eyes, but maybe you need a change of routine? Back is a bit stiff today, but 'used', rather than painful - will need to concentrate on getting glutes & hammys taking more of the weight before next deadlifts (3 rep max). It's amazing how quickly you feel & see the difference when you're able to get 2 or 3 decent gym sessions a week, Sharkie. I feel the same weirdness not running as much now! |

I was equally disciplined this morning at Lee Valley Athetics centre. All my favourite toys - high jump, long jump, 60m track etc etc ... and I ignored their siren call and after half an hour's drills went into the - locked - gym and did an hour's lifting. It's VERY serious in there - lots of racks and lifting platforms and huge weights. Takes me ages setting things up but I was pleased to progress my deadlift to two sets of 6 at 40kg. (that's heavy for me) |

Well done Sharkie - that's still bloody heavy! The weights area in my gym is a nightmare on weeknights - absolutely packed, mainly with annoying men (one of which stole the clips from the rack I told him I was just about to use tonight). Also ended up sharing a rack/platform tonight - I was doing squats in the rack, another guy asked if he could deadlift on the platform behind me. 3 rep max of 70kg tonight - hard and still scary. First try of my new weight belt as well - I think I love it a little bit

'Squats IN the rack'? Is that any different from moving the bar away from the rack (three or four metres for me on Tuesday) ot just a figureo f speech? You don't mean a Smith machine do you? I don't understand them! |

Bit hard to make that out, but now I think about it perhaps IW means the sort of cage thing that is supposed to make it safer, there's one at the seaside gym but I've never used it.
