Calling the happy hookers - I have a crochet pattern quandary. There is a pattern for a lace doily with skulls that I want to turn into a tattoo etsy.com But it seems to only be available as written instructions and pictures, and I want really want a chart for my artist to work from. Does anyone have experience of drawing a chart from written instructions? Is it horribly difficult? Am I just going to have a try and make the thing in a nice light coloured thread to give him instead? |

I’ve never used charts but the ones I’ve seen are graphical, lines and circles, and for a circular pattern like that would probably only be one section. Do you want it to look like a crochet chart or do you want it to look like a crochet doily? Can he work from those pictures? Also just be careful with copyright…think about where you might post it online and check the sellers copyright |

The pictures with black thread are very difficult to see any definition in, but ones with lighter thread might be better. I'm not sure if I want it to look like a chart or like a finished piece - I really like the look of charts and it would be easier to do in a single colour with no shading. |

Can you show your artist the picture of the doily and see what he comes up with?

Love the doily - really clever design. It'll make a stunning tattoo.

Yeah, I've sent him the pictures of the black doily, I should probably send some different colour ones where the stitch definition is clearer too. I'm seeing him soon for touch-ups on my right arm, so we can discuss it then ![]() |

I don't think it would be that tricky to create a chart from written instructions. There is software which you can use e.g. stitchworkssoftware.com (not that I can install it on my work PC - and there's no Mac version). Or transcribe from the instructions using standard crochet chart notation - though I'd be intrigued to see whether the skull detail is clear in chart format vs. finished item.

That's exactly the sheet of thing I was hoping existed, thank you!

I tried recreating the parkrun logo as a crochet chart, ages ago. Might revisit that.
