Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

That’s why I don’t often make garments. The pressure to get it to fit is immense! And the worry of not liking it once made. That said, I’m currently wearing a jumper I knitted.

Crochet is much trickier for me for garments as my row gauge is always too tight.

I’ve been making sweaters for years, this one had 2 false starts because of pattern and yarn mismatch, I’d knitted both sleeves when I realised it was too big on the chest and the sleeves were too tight, so I had to take it back to the underarm and redistribute all the stitches, I’m bored with it now so it’s very slow going but I’m not going to be wearing it till next winter so no rush!

The trouble is.. I have enough hats/ scarves/ socks to last forever. That’s why I decided I had to pluck up courage to start garments. But the world of modifications for a fit that’s right fit you feels overwhelming.. lots to learn.

Jelly..have you just learnt those modifications with experience ? My next sweater will be top down.. I can see the advantage of trying it on as you knit.

I'm knitting a top down baby cardi, for a friend's new arrival. Got halfway through the yoke and it was coming out really tiny - my gauge is tight too, and I know newborns are small, but this was already a good cm or two down on the measurements given. So I've started over with bigger needles and the next size up and now it looks enormous! But I guess at least baby can grow into it.

I'd like to try a sweater for me but like runnyeyes, also slightly overwhelmed by what it might involve - any tips or advice welcome!

I have found project notes on Ravelry helpful.. it makes you aware of what might be a problem.. but it also makes you aware how often people are disappointed with their FO. Shame after all the work .. and yarn is very expensive.

I have been knitting for 30 years eke! I’ve also done some basic fashion design and pattern drafting when it comes to sewing, I’m not an expert or anything, even last year I was knitting a handspun 4ply top down cardigan for several months when I realised it wasn’t going to fit. If I can find a way to get something to work I will! I think we also get very ‘fussy’ about how things fit when we make clothes, although if I do try a store made thing on and the fit isn’t quite right I wouldn’t buy it!

Ravelry is excellent for looking at what projects people have made and how it fits, and which yarn works and which doesn’t. Taking the time to swatch and check measurements is vital too.

The two knitted jumpers I made were by Carol Feller and they worked out exactly as expected, so I’d make more of her patterns.
