I totally want an overlocker too. So I can make stretchy stuff for small people. I am following with interest!

I'm sewing quite a bit with stretch jersey - it's OK on my machine but an overlocker would be so much quicker - I wouldn't need to do double seams and then trim them by hand

I got my overlocker out for the first time in ages yesterday to sew a jersey fabric. I’d forgotten how quick it is. Trouble is I’ve only got white threads which makes the inside of my purple garment look a bit odd. You need four reels of a colour which makes it expensive to match every single fabric you might use. I must find a supplier for at least some black and perhaps red and green thread.

Forgot to say it’s a four thread Janome, about 20 years old.

I totally love my overlocker and it is most definitely quicker - i use it to put together any knit project other than hemming obviously which i do with twin needle on sewing machine - and also to stop edges fraying on wovens before sewing parts together. As SS says only slight downside is the number of reels of thread you need. I have black, white and a few others that i’ve bought when i thought it really necessary - i just tend to use what i’ve got closest to the colour required. You can ‘cheat’ with thread colours by using two reels of a good colour match for the looping threads and something else for the threads that go through the needles to match without buying too much extra thread...
I find woolly nylon for looping threads PITA to use, but gives great results..

Could you buy two reels and wind onto two bobbins for the other two?

I’ve sewn stretch material before, I think most machines have a stretch stitch now. Finishing the seams is a pain but I think I’ve just used a zigzag to seal them.
