Is it trying to remember that US is dc for tc and sc for dc or are there bigger differences that I've yet to find out?

Those are the ones I've noticed so far M4P and it's silly, I should be able to translate as I go, but I have a mental block about it, after I spent a very frustrating half an hour on the internet trying to work out what if single crochet was chain stitch or something else.

Yes that's correct. I find it ok once the pattern is established and just translate as I go along.
Wobbling you could always look through and write over the English terms.
The clues it's a US pattern are sc and hdc which don't exist in English, as they translate to double and half-treble. I notice a lot of patterns now state whether they're US or UK terminology

Apart from chain, I never remember which stitch is which anyway, so always have to look them up!! This particular pattern has a tutorial on you tube which helped especially with the crocodile stitch.

Here's a link to a handy conversion guide:-

Last week I decided I was crocheting presents - a scarf, a cafetiere cozy and two pairs of fingerless mittens. The mittens are probably the most complex thing I've ever crocheted, (being neither a rectangle or square or involving lots of treble stitch) and there has been much sighing and frogging and despairing over the first mitten. I struggled with the foundation chain, I struggled with the ribbing and then I was baffled about how I create a thumb.

Last night I started again, making it bigger and now, I've pretty much finished it. I need to add contrast colour to the top and the thumb, and weave in and block, but I'm really pleased with this. Once I've overcome my idiocy, it was quite simple.
