I was shocked when I moved to Leeds from Liverpool. I had just assumed that of course Leeds would have a John Lewis. I have been waiting 32 years so it was just as well that, when it finally arrived, it was a proper big one!

Make the most of the JL haberdashery departments, they're supposed to be planning to get rid of them.

Our local family run department store closed it's haberdashery department a month ago. I was distraught that I had missed the huge sale of yarn. By the time I found out there were only a few sad balls of cheap acrylic left.

JL aren't closing their haberdashery departments. For some reason it was reported they were after their new managing director was interviewed in the Sunday Times. But they aren't.

It would be an odd move given the renewed interest in all things crafty.

I saw that too SK.

The whole JL area in Leeds is so much better than the scummy area that was there before. Wasn't too interested in the rest of the shops but the centre does look fab and I had a nice lunch at Pain Quotidien.

I came to Leeds in 1989 and there were rumours of a JL then. And the Eastgate redevelopment has been talked about for almost as long.

One of the parents of the children I was teaching a few years ago said, when I pronounced my delight that John Lewis was going to be built, 'but that's where the really good porn shops are'.

:-o

The only reason I went down there was for the DVLA. There might have been a wool shop too. But it wasn't a pleasant part to be in

So they say, Sallykate, but they certainly seem to be scaling them back. Since the Times article at the weekend, there's been a thread discussing it all on Ravelry ravelry.com

Be interesting to see what happens.

The haberdashery at John Lewis is not anything like it used to be in the 1970s and 80s...

I have to say I was disappointed it wasn't bigger, but it did have some nice stuff and really good dress fabric is hard to find
