Rowed on Monday (3 x 15 min UT2), drove to Leicester and spent 3 days up there with the family dealing with stuff, drove home this morning and rowed (4 x 10 min UT2). Just managing to get it done when I can. Hopefully I'll get another session in tomorrow AM, and again Saturday, and possible early Sunday too. The week isn't a complete write-off as far as training goes at least.

It all counts, Nellers. Metres in the bank, calories burned, beers earned.

Just got through another UT2 sesh this morning to top things up a bit. 20/15/10/5 minutes with 1 minute rests.

I deserve a beer but it might be a bit early. ;-)

Another UT2 session of 30 mins at r20 knocked out this PM. I've just had that beer, Muttley.

So I'm doing UT2 rate, and hitting the power and pace that my handy reference table gives me for about a 7:30 2K. However, my Heart Rate is well into the UT1 zone, and on the longer pieces it's tipping into the Threshold zone.

Should I be slowing down to keep the HR down or sticking with the pace (which doesn't feel particularly hard) and just getting the miles/metres done until the HR starts to come down to where it should be? Any thoughts anyone?

I'm no expert but anyway ... I usually do my rows according to a single metric: stroke rate, or hr, or pace. UT2 is a heart rate band so if I decide to do that I stick to the hr regardless. Or if the instrux are how many spm or 2k+ whatever, I go by that. Otherwise I end up cycling between all the metrics and it gets distracting.

Alternatively, maybe you need to revisit your hr bands?

I trust you enjoyed that hard-earned beer :-)

Talking of which, 10,000 done at UT2 this morning. Rather warm here but the pace faded less than I expected and then mostly in just the final 1,000. Good to see because I usually struggle in the heat.

New max wattage, hit 400w so powered on to get 442w. Well pleased with that.

Big numbers, Fenners. Well done.

I took your advice, Muttley, and did the UT2 session last night at r18. That meant I was a couple of splits slower but the HR stayed almost entirely inthe UT2 zone. It also felt pretty easy so I think I'll be doing a bit more r18 work as the volume steps up over the next few weeks.

Having said that tonight the plan has me doing a deliberate UT1, so 2 x 10 min @ r22. I'm curious about how high the HR gets working at that intensity.

I find that UT sessions are a bit of a balancing act, trying to avoid going out too quick and then having to really slow down. My UT2 is 110-120 bpm so with the average pace of my previous session as a guide I aim to keep the hr to 115 by the halfway mark and then let it drift to the ceiling by the end. Similar with UT1, for which the band is 120-130.

I only use the hrm during continuous UT sessions though. If intervals I go by pace or spm.

UT2 for me goes up to 143, and UT1 to 155. When I'm fit I can usually do r20 and the 2:10 pace within that UT2 zone, and as I get fitter the pace comes down a bit. Recently, though, after a bit of a break where I did very little and no rowing at all, it's needing r18 to keep the HR down, and that's giving me 2:12-13.

In theory according to the table I use, UT2 at 2:13 should mean I can do a 7:40 2k or thereabouts. I'm not actually convinced I could right now but give me a couple of weeks and I reckon that might be on.

Shorter intervals it has to be pace or watts, though. I agree. On a 2 minute piece the HR doesn't have time to get up high enough to be where it theoretically should be.
