Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

So I finally got Mitch the gym manager on site so I could get him to do the update on the PM5s tonight. Huge smiles as I've now got the ergdata set up and all the data downloading. Loving it!

4 x 2k tonight but I cocked up setting things going so I only got 3 x 2k recorded. SOrted for next time though.

A steady 6500m this morning, as per The Plan. Gradually extending the distance on these. Put on the old-time ska playlist for some rocksteady riddims, brain into neutral, and away we go. Eased a little in the last 1500m to keep hr comfortably within bounds. A good session. Onwards.

5 x 2k this morning. Starting to feel more normal again being on the rower.

Starting to wonder about the stuff I'm getting from ErgData. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

So what's "normal" for drive length? I'm getting about 1.35m to 1.42ish. The only stuff I've been able to find about stroke length is really non-specific and just says it's relative to leg length, technique etc but that that having too long a drive length is also bad and may indicate reaching too far at the catch or leaning too far back at the end of the stroke.

So without a coach or any other input how do I know if a 1.35m is too long? Any clues?

Not sure what's normal but my drive length varies from 1.33 - 1.48. I think focussing on technique with strong catch is the place to increase drive length rather than leaning back too far and bringing handle right up to your chin.

Agreed Mousey. Handle to lower chest and don't lean back too far.

My worry is that no-one watches my stroke and I get no feedback. It feels like I'm not leaning back too far or reaching for the catch but I don't really know. KNowing that you're getting similar drive length reassures me. Thanks.

I can't claim any expertise, but feel there is probably an acceptable drive length range, and we are probably both in it. Although I can hit 1.48 there is no way I could sustain that length through an entire piece, but feel I'm doing ok if consistently working in the 1.42 - 1.45 range. I think some drills concentrating on developing a strong catch would be a useful addition to a training program - something like a weekly bout of 30/30s with the damper set a bit higher than usual.

It feels "normal" to me in that range. I've not tried any hard rowing yet since having ErgData though so maybe when I do I'll see a difference. Who knows?

I guess the test will be that when I do a hard rowing session, or up my stroke rate significantly, does my drive length reduce or increase or is the stroke technique solid enough to survive it? Watch this space.

Today was set as a steady 10k row. Started well, keeping pace outside 2.15s and s/m down to about 18. ABout half way through it my HR started to go up a little bit so I dropped the stroke rate to 16 and 17 to keep things under control.

Then when I got to 9km I realised I was close to doing 45 minutes, which would be nice, so I upped it a bit and started chasing the clock, which wasn't clever but it was fun. Finished on 45.06 but at 1.42 pace with a stroke rate of 34.

Not quite the controlled, steady row I had in mind but I did enjoy it.

Outstanding effort, Nellers and a strong finish. Did it feel reasonably comfortable?

It felt very easy through to about 7k, then completely manageable through to 9k when I decided to hit the gas. After that it was.....err.......less so!
