Excellent stuff Nellers. You've been out for quite a while. In a similar vein I'm off out soon for a short run/jog to test that dicky calf. Can't let age and gradual decrepitude encroach too far.

Indeed, Muttley. Take it easy and be sensible if it gives you any trouble. Good luck.

I see you wangled yourself the daily champ title for yesterday, Nellers ... so the recovery is going nicely?

All going well so far, Muttley. Keeping it cautious and moving in small steps but nothing has pinged, spasmed, torn or otherwise effed me up yet, which is nice. Seems to be a pattern developing of the big metre rowers taking the first of the month off. |

Tried the 'rounded' back position I spotted in the WC event for my 30 min row today and it felt more connected and comfortabe, I was holding around 2:20 pretty well for the first 20 mins and ended with 6617m at 2:16.5. Felt easier maintaining the rather than needing to drop off a little at slower paces previously. Although the steady section was great, the pick needs work as I felt I lost form there but given I made a change to how I was rowing all perfect first time shouldn't be the expectation. HR up to 139 AVG with max 173 so getting decent aerobic fitness maintenance from it now. Just got to do it more consistently now, then hopefully when I try intervals again I'll be stronger. |

Hi folks, No rowing for me so far this week - I've been in the outdoor office for the past three days. Back to get some metres in for the long weekend.   |

I feel for you, mate, stuck in that office. 😉 SPR, I suspect the rounded back thing is getting a bit more length at the catch but at the risk of back injury if you’re not strong enough to maintain it, but I could be wrong. I also suspect that most of us round our backs more than we want to, and probably more than we think. I must get Mrs Nellers to video me on the rower soon and see what it looks like. Spent half an hour this morning dismantling the fan assembly, cleaning all the dust out, and putting it back together. I should do this more often! Anyway, then I did 3 x 15 minutes @ r18 which is the longest row I’ve done since January. All good, no pain or problems other than that it was about 28c in the shed by the time I finished! 🥵 |

Nellers - It might get a bit more length at the catch but the specific thing is more that it stays constant as they drive and at the finish so it's not really about a longer overall stroke. That's why I said it's maintaining stiffness (I think my stroke rate being a little higher yesterday is related to this). Maybe at higher efforts there's more rounding at the front and to lengthen. Agree that it might need some caution though and when rowing yesterday even though it felt better than previously to start I was wondering about whether there would be an effect later in the row but I also felt better at the end. That's not to say I shouldn't still be cautious as it will be changing the load a bit from previously even if it's better so causing different stresses. This article has a few images showing what I've talking about. rowingbiomechanics.weebly.com with this image as a good one: rowingbiomechanics.weebly.com Vs mspfitness.com and this image showing a 'hyper' upright position: mspfitness.com Hopefully that shows that I'm not talking about a back in strong flexion but a less strict upright position. |

Right, back to it, after a few day off (!) Used my non-riwing fitness to properly go for it, for the first 5k of the season. And because the c2ctc.com June challenge is a 5k. Woo-hoo! Took 13 seconds off my previous best, at 1:52.5/500m. Definitely sub-20 minutes. This is me recovering right now: |
