Oh no, so sorry Pix and so easy done! You really need to take in fluids AND energy, even if you have to force yourself. I only succeeded in my races when I set set times: 750 ml, a whole bottle, every 45 minutes, a gel every half hour. I would buy boxes of them at a time, until I was sponsored by Torq and given them.
My previous team was sponsored by Cn something and distribution was through our team manager. He thought I needed too many spinsor bottles as well as too many gels, bars and powder for drinks.
He said: we would do the milk race on half a litre of water and a jam sandwich ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™„
I was then told off because I was using a previous sponsors drinks bottles, as I needed at least 12 for a 12 hour race and no-one to refill them.
I also used a previous sponsor's products as I still got a discount and frankly the stuff was better!!!
Pitfalls!

You NEED to fuel to succeed!

Ys at about mile 11 I heard Gobi say an ironman is lost on the bike!

My plan is 500ml energy drink and a gel every hour on the bike - I have a tempo timer attached to my helmet to bleep every 10mins to take drink now. I have an alarm on my garmin but I don't hear it.
I'm filling my aero bottle with gels and some water! and have a list of locations to take on gel (I can't open gels easily on a run with 2 hands so a bike is never happening!)
then similar on the run
Problem is for me being slow that's like 18+ gels in the day (1 on swim exit) and a lot of sweet drink
I use kendal mint cake (loads of carbs) on the bike too as it almost melts in the mouth and the mint settles the tum! but I do need to find something else urgently that's easy to eat with little chewing ideally savoury too

"using a rolling pin or a wine bottle .." haha great line but it doesn't say if you need to drink the wine first?!

I used cold miso soup Pix, just the odd bottle for the salts, and made salty lemonade, Indian style.
You get very very sick of all the sweet stuff.
My support crew for 24 hpur races was always very worried about my inability to eat...
Rice pudding with added salt and honey worked well for me too.
You know, I feel sick just talking to you about gels!

Roast potatoes with salt are also good, and marmite

Pix - you have lost over a stone since last summer - that's not to be scoffed at!

There's a new mountain fuel "jelly" that's not flavoured and thinner than normal gels. I've only tried it on one run, but to me it tasted of very dilute lemon juice with a bit of salt. Probably ok when you've had your fill of sweet stuff.
I like peanut butter in Warburtons thins, cut into bitesize pieces,

The salty lemony sounds nice actually.

Gu do an expresso normal gel and a thinner one, the normal one is like a shot of sweet coffee, the tinner one was too strong for me and the pack is a bit large to carry many of them.
