Stander
I rarely watch TV (wish I hadn't Saturday morning - woeful) , but as this follows after Strictly (which wife is mad about), we will probably catch more of it.

Think the floods come from the Book of Dust which is the prequel. (Only a spoiler if you haven't watched part 1 yet as Lyra refers to him as her uncle in that).

The flood is referenced in the prequel book (Book of Dust Vol1). In fact, it's essentially all of that book. I liked that bit, it helped with the story.

In the books daemons communicate in words -but without speaking. Sort of telepathy but seeing as they are part of the person then the conversation would be in the person's head wouldn't it? I felt they got round it quite well - avoiding too much of a talking animal feel (which would be wrong) - by only rarely showing the creatures mouth moving.
They had to do that occasionally to establish where the 'other' side of the conversation comes from.
I don't think James McAvoy is too young (Charles Dance good as he is -and I haven't seen the film - is much too old)
After all SPOILER ALERT...

It was Daniel Craig who played Asriel in the film?

Where did Charles Dance come in?
In this TV version, Lyra thinks Asriel is her uncle. I think that was true at start of book too?
I'm enjoying The Book of Dust (prequel) prompted by Kindle suggestion and then others here and on FB (I don't post much on FB but I read references).
e.g. *waves at Hendo!* (which I didn't on FB!)
I didn't think anyone would hear someone else's daemon. You converse with them in your head. But on screen that was always going to be speaking. I suppose it's possible that if a strong enough emotion was conveyed by your daemon, that someone else's daemon would pick it up. e.g. like you pick up on someone's anger or love, without words spoken? That's how I see the daemons anyway, like your conscience, your emotion, sometimes your rational self, but mostly emotional, just different aspects, usually the deeper ones, of your own personality?
