The daemons can definitely commuinicate with each other, though it seems they don't communicate with other people.
e.g. in the chapter "The enchanted island" in the Book of Dust, there's a passage with Malcolm and Alice's daemon's talking directly to each other.
PP uses words which appear to be vocal dialogue (e.g. "said", "whispered", "asked") when the daemons communicate with their humans, but I think that is more of a literary device than actual out-loud communication. Certainly in the TV programme last night the conversations with daemons were given the flavour of a mental conversation, though the daemons can make animal noises which humans and daemons can both hear.

Daniel Craig was another good piece of casting. More "lordly" than McAvoy, but possibly a little too much "lord" and not enough "adventurer / scientist". Ideal of course would have been Jason Isaacs (hello).

I got in last night to find out that my OH (who hasn't read the books) had watched this and didn't have a clue what was going on - not helped by putting the children to bed at the same time - so we're going to watch it again later on iPlayer. Really been looking forward to this since the adverts started a while ago. Almost finished re-reading the Northern Light.
Witches daemons can talk to other people, but then witches daemons are special.
