It’s only Northern Lights. The other two will come later I’m sure. I did like how the titles are matched to later books, I loved the reflected worlds bit. It’s a long time since I read the books but thought I could pick up where things were different (I don’t remember floods). I felt there was a lot of scene setting so far. I thought the extended teaser was too much, but then perhaps for people who do t know the story it might be enticing. |

I thought James McEvoy was too young, but that might be because I really like Charles Dance. The film did annoy me, it’s not a compass! Though I didn’t think it was horrendous. Did anyone see the Imagine documentary on Philip Pullman on BBC4 afterwards? I wasn’t paying great attention but it used clips from the film and readings. And I loved how PP can’t possibly write on paper with four holes, it has to be two |

PP gave a good interview on the Adam Buxton podcast recently, worth a listen.

Sorry, yes, fan-fail! Northern Lights. Golden Compass was daft movie name. In the movie, I liked Lyra, I thought actress was great. I didn't like the bears, they just didn't seem right. And it didn't need that much "action". But I guess a big budget movie always does. But any adaptation of a book, esp fantasy, is so hard, because your imagination paints a picture unique to you. The best bits about the book are the feelings of you, your daemon, other people and their relationships. It's wonderful stuff. My wife's pal worked for his publisher doing promotion stuff and she said he was a really nice, and fascinating, guy. We had chance to meet him, but it didn't come to pass. What did PP hate about the movie, out of interest? G |

I heard him on Jo Whiley a few weeks ago, he was really interesting to listen to, especially talking about the writing process. He doesn’t know what’s going to happen until he writes it and the turns sometimes surprise him. Did you hear the Michael Sheen narrated the audiobooks (PP loves them) and has named his recently born daughter Lyra? |

Can someone clear up something that’s been bothering me. Can people hear someone else’s dæmon talking? Or do they just communicate with their owner? And how do dæmons get their names, I’d assumed the child named than but when Asriel takes Lyra to Oxford as a baby he says ‘this is Lyra and Pantalaimon’ (I haven’t read the newer books)

According to Fandom Meglet, daemons are given their name by the daemons of the parents? hdm.fandom.com › wiki › Dæmon |

I enjoyed it very much and am looking forward to next week.. which is very unusual for me as I rarely watch TV. And it made me wonder why there has never been a good adaptation of Gormenghast for film or TV

Same here, my TV watching rarey gets beyond Only Connect, Uni Challeng and pointless, mainly because must 'dramas' are either miserable or contain, murders and lots of fairly realistic violence I would rather not watch, then soaps, and then shite entertainment. Sport, obvs I watch sport (not much in the way of cycling or athletics as they're all cheats) I had sort of assumed only the person can her their Daemon, that's how the book comes across, a private conversation. |

I think it started really well. I read the books to my daughter and we were remembering the plot and characters. No I didn't remember any flood, but that seems to have been written in to explain the relationship between Asriel and Lyra and how she got to Jordan College. I could believe Asriel being Lyra's uncle. I really enjoyed it, not least for it being the first time in years we had the whole family watching something together.
