I'm finding myself completely lost in Westeros at the moment.

Obviously watching HotD although I'm a week behind because of football.

Alongside that I've started re-reading the Song of Ice & Fire books from the start again in the (forlorn) hope that by the time I slowly work my way through there might be a sixth book to read.

And when I wake up in the night and struggle to get back to sleep, as I almost always do at some stage, I've got the audiobook of "A Dance with Dragons" as my bedtime story.

I'm genuinely surprised, having not read either for a long time, by how much is in there that I'd completely forgotten because it's not part of the TV series (Penny, Trystan, Most of what Davos gets up to).

Some big things that I won't spoil openly here but even little details like Magister Illyrio apparently worshipping the R'hllor, the God of Light, had completely passed me by.

Also reading an early Bran chapter, from before he fell, he's thinking about all the heroic knights that he's going to be like and includes the Cargill twins, so they were part of the story from almost the very beginning.

I haven't read the ASOI&F books since the show ended, but I still rely on the wiki for research and watch podcasts which reference book connections. Erryk and Arrky Cargyll were, indeed, the first characters from the Dance of the Dragons to ever be mentioned. GRRM probably hadn't thought about the actual conflict in much depth at the time, since he doesn't meticulously plot his stories, but their inclusion adds so much history to the world in retrospect.

I also find them funny because I worked with people named Eryk and Arek at my last job. (They were both Polish.)

Agree that it was a bit of a throwaway at the time that grew into more, although it does talk about them dying on each other's swords "When brother fought sister for the Iron Throne" or words to that effect, but it also says this was hundreds of years ago, but to a 7 year old it would probably seem like that.

The other thing that really hits home this time round is how Jon really has the measure of Theon from the very beginner. Theon is a dickhead and Jon seems to be the only one that can see it. When I first read it I didn't know where Theon's story would take him and that completely escaped me. Looking back now I'm pretty sure George had that broadly plotted out in some way from the very start.

I also listen to a lot of podcasts around the show(s) and they all have a degree of book readership and knowledge seeping in (Cast of Kings, Talk The Thrones, The Ringerverse and House of R mostly these days).

Have you checked out History of Westeros on YouTube? They do a lot of book-related content, but they also review GoT/HotD with an "unsullied" viewer and a book expert as co-hosts. It makes for an interesting dynamic.

Yeah, I’ve watched a fair few of their historical videos but I’ve not watched their show reviews. The other YouTube channels I’ve watched are In Deep Geek and Alt Shift X.

For the show reviews/ recaps I’m mainly sticking with Screencrush and New Rockstars who I like and who cover a lot of geeky stuff (Star Wars, marvel, DC, the boys, sci fi and fantasy generally).

I try to avoid the rabid fanboy “you killed the franchise and should die” end of the continuum as much as I can!

My review of episode 3 is now up - fetcheveryone.com/blog-share.php?id=485663

I'm sticking to a mix of spoiler-free and spoiler-heavy coverage.

I listen to Dragoncast. Just caught up with this week’s episode so will listen tomorrow.

Did anybody else go ‘oooh!’ when they appeared with dragon eggs that will end up in Pentos with Rhaena? Another nice link to GOT.

Also I knew Harrenhall was destroyed by dragonfire but has that already happened?

Yes, it was burned by Balerion the Black Dread during Aegon's Conquest, about 130 years earlier.

I didn't find the egg reveal that surprising (probably because that shot appeared in a couple of trailers), but I audibly gasped when *that cameo* happened.
