The thermostat decided it was turn to switch the heating on, although it's not doing much downstairs at the moment as the fire is lit

Yes. Just now. Am freezing in spite extra layers. It's a big house and no-one is downstairs or upstairs so my little high ceilinged flat is the centre of a cold sandwich.

We never touch our controls - if the temperature drops below 21* at any time of the year, the heating comes on.

It has been on and off since Saturday. My wife feels the cold whereas it doesn't bother me. Her childhood home had central heating and mine didn't. As my dad would say, "If you feel cold, put a jumper on."
