Brunski, one key driver of heart rate is your core temperature, and as you get fitter, you shed waste heat better, so you’ll be cooler at a given work rate. That’s another reason your hr doesn’t rise so far (there’s an interesting publication from the US dept of defence saying that the rate of increase of heart rate at constant rate of work is proportional to core temperature, so as you get fitter, you will also take longer to reach a given hr).

220- age is actually accurate for me! I guess that has to be one. Max is 174, I’m 49 so formula gives me 171

I agree Larkin, when I see graphs with the quick changes like that at the end it's normally from the strap slipping. And then there are also times when it just is weird too.

I'm currently working to Lactate Threshold based zones.
If I use 220 - age my MHR is 2bpm higher than the top of my current zone 2, if I use the Parker/Norwegian formula my MHR is 2bpm lower than my LT.

Interesting that thanks @badger, guess the fact I’m around 8lbs heavier is also a factor in dispelling heat

I'm still persevering with HR training, although I sometimes query whether my HR monitor is really accurate, especially during the first half mile. It's tricky to stay under 144bpm so I am walking plenty and ave pace is generally around 14-15 minute miles. BUT today I felt it is starting to pay off. My first mile was 12 minutes and felt easy The other 3.5 miles were slower but there were s to be petted and muddy fields to squelch through.

first mile on mine can be bonkers, spikes up to 17X after about 3-5 minutes, then it settles down. If I were really serious about HR training I'd wear the HR strap, but I'm not and it's uncomfortable, so I don't.

To be fair the strap in winter can be a little erratic. Static interference happens a fair bit but settles down after around half a mile.

I've got so fed up with my strap mis-reading when under a couple of layers that I've started using the optical. It's not as precise as a strap, when the strap is working, but at the moment it's generally far more reliable.
