Thats what I am finding flanker. This year seems to be worse for some reason. Not sure what, guessing there could be loads of things that impact (different kit is definitely a factor as some T-Shirts are worse than others!)

Yep, some kit is definitely worse than others. I think the (relatively) warm and damp weather also makes it worse.

Ah so it's not just me then - that's reassuring.

Maybe battery is on the way out? Although I get clean readings I must test mine with a cotton T to see if there's any difference.

replaced the battery this year, so unlikely. It could be the strap is on the way out!

Cotton t made all the difference for me, but I couldn't run in them for anything other than a cool easy run in dry weather.

Gave up in the end - too many runs with dodgy data. Bought a Polar OH1+ and only used it in anger the once so far - but very effective, comfortable, easy to use.

Will be a pain having to recharge regularly, and the charging doc and HRM each are tiny so could easily get lost, but at least I won't be getting ridiculous spiking.

Be interested to see how you go with it Larks. I am getting sick of dodgy readings. It seems to be worse this year. Sometimes starts off fine and I think this is all good, then plodding along and I am up gradually creeping up and up. It then stays there for a while (myfitbit which albeit is wrist is around 25 beats lower, I only use Fitbit for steps, sleep and a watch!) then after about 10 mins, it reduces back and is similar to the fitbit.

I do find Fitbit is way out at effort, so guessing that at steady easy pace Optical HRM probably works OK.

Keep me posted as the study I have just read on the OH1 points to a solid alternative to chest.

I am interested too. Don’t trust my optical enough. How much does it cost also.

Does anyone here use a Polar M430 and can report on the accuracy of the HR readings? My Garmin Forerunner 225 is on its way out and I was thinking of picking up one of these as a replacement, as they're favourably reviewed. Not that bothered about the optical heart rate monitoring, but if it works well that would be a bonus.

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
