I did it 2013 - my last marathon and got a pb - 3.50 ( only sub 4 I've managed). I was sure at the time that the course was short from my garmin and going on garmin connect struggled to find anyone who had run over 26.2. I emailed coursemeasurement.org.uk the next day and received a swift reply detailing the problems with relying on gps which I fully took on board. Despite this I have always had my doubts.
If I was able to go on garmin connect 24hrs after the 2013 marathon and raise my concerns you would have thought the officials would have done the same and re-measured the course. Atleast that way, runners in 2014 +2015 would have been ok.
In any case I don't blame any individuals and no one has died.

Nelly - how can you say the runners dont come out with credit - most of us werent accepting of pb's and were questioning i, right from the off. In fact, Fartlek above raised it straight away and was told by you that he was wrong and it was a function of the course switchbacks!

I may also have mentioned that I thought it short only to get corrected.......

We all knew Nelly. We all posted about it. Some went further and reported it to the organisers. They should have felt the vibe and done something about it ahead of 2014. The original error may lie with the measurement team but neither they nor the organisers did anything about it when the running community knew.

I hope they can get everything right again for 2017 but I must say there's no way that I would run there next year. They would need a year to prove themselves again to me.

simpleeee - what fartlek actually ASKED on the 2013 thread is ""was there anything about this course that might make all our GPS measurements come in short?"" and I answered his question (not TOLD him) that Garmins don't like switchbacks, but don't let the facts get in the way of your obvious argument with me going back to 2013!

fartlek - it's interesting to hear you emailed AUKCM in 2013 because I specially asked them ""Did anybody raise their suspicions to AUKCM prior to 2015?"" And I got a different answer (please accept that is not me saying I don't believe you)

WW - I agree the organisers have stuck their heads in the sand on this issue. Us discussing it on here and doing nothing about it is exactly why I think (to a lesser degree) we as runners don't come out with any credit in this. Did any runners report it to the course measurers, not according to them, hence we are all complicit by accepting it.

Nelly a friend of mine was a pacer in both 2013 and 14 and is adamant he reported that the course was short and says that other members of the pacing team did the same. This was to Xtra Mile rather than the course measures though. Perhaps this doesn't add anything new but does seem valid if GMM did nothing to pass on the concerns to the course measures. If they did, and were fobbed off, why wouldn't they say that? Too difficult?

Unfortunately I don't have a copy of my email commn with the measurers. However I do remember being told that switchbacks were an issue and proximity to military installations/activities could affect measurements. I was also told that the measurer used for GMM was involved in measuring the 2012 Olympic marathon course (not saying that was innacurate).
I'm afraid if they say no one raised concerns with them, they are being economical with the truth.

fartlek - like I said above I'm not saying for a second I don't believe, all I was doing was repeating what I was told directly yesterday, and hence what I based my opinion about the runners not being blameless upon.
