Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I pepper my emails at work with capitals, no doubt I'd vex a lot of "proper" grammaticals ;) I make no apologies, I studied German at A-Level and I definitely use fewer capitals than they do, so it's all good...

It's easier with German, though, as the rules for capital letter use are clear and must be followed at all times without question.

[as per most things in Germany 😉. It drives us mad when the locals are waiting for the green walking light to appear when there’s no traffic!]

[I do that here, it feels rude to walk off and have the lights stop cars for nobody. Though I think some ped lights will cancel if you do that. ]

The idea that "jaywalking" could be an offence is one of those irrational pet hates of mine. I always cross if there is no traffic and avoid pressing the buttons if I can see a gap behind oncoming vehicles. I also skirt around those annoying barriers that make you take a long route between crossing points.

I'm not convinced that Jaywalking is an actual offence in Germany, or whether it's one of those things that people just refuse to do when it's possible that they may be perceived to be doing something wrong by children.

[Similar here in Stockholm; I go rogue and cross if it's safe to do so, regardless of what colour the light is. Probably marks me out as a foreigner.]

It certainly used to be illegal in Germany. On the spot fine. Not sure now.

Three decades ago I was in New York and walked across the road against the lights. A small boy said to his dad "look what that man's doing!" He was genuinely shocked.

Presumably if I'd taken out a gun and shot everyone he'd have been less surprised.
