Congrats on the PB.

In fairness to Garmin, a marathon is probably an unproductive training effort, lol. There's a saying that the best thing you can do is marathon training without the actual marathon (can't remember who first said it).

It does come back to the other issue though that it's all focused on VO2 Max and a marathon isn't about absolute VO2 Max. A marathon is also definitely not the type of run you'd expect to increase VO2 Max

Steve, yup sure.

For me though I usually speed up when I get bored and want to get home, but I need to keep som runs easy, then pacepro pace me with a lower pace. Great.

Also I will try it for the opposite reason of course.

Very good, Big_G. And how lovely to be in Sevilla, one of my favourite places.

Thanks everyone.

SPR, thanks for the explanation. Makes sense. It was just a bit amusing when I stopped the watch and it flashed up with that message. Admittedly at that point, immediately after the race, it was probably an accurate description though!

Dvorak, Iโ€™ve never been before, but itโ€™s a great city. The tapas have been superb!

In case anyone wants to read a bit more about the race I posted a write up on the 3:15 thread.

BigG, just looking at your HR trace on here you seem to get up to 100% HR max at the end of your marathon. That looks wrong to me, I'd suspect the vast majority, save maybe the last mile or 2, of a marathon to be building up to, or just teetering a few beats below your threshold.

Maybe Garmin has the wrong HR max for you, or your watch started to pick up incorrect HR readings. I'd guess that would impact on the productivity of your run in the way Garmin works it out (heartbeats per mile).

My max in 195, Brunski, and I have had this a couple of times in a field test. Ignore the first two miles as they are wrong, as the chest strap sometimes doesn't get a good contact early on in the run - this is a regular occurrence for me. I reached 192 in the last few hundred metres, but I was below 171 until half way and then it slowly crept up. For reference, I do a large part of my running at 142 or below.

When I checked the HR trace I thought it seemed reasonable in comparison to other marathons I have done (except the first two miles, which I ignore).
