Badger, if you want a widget to recommend to them at *automagically* turns on the backlight, Barcode Wallet that I referenced (and I think same one larks referred to?) does that. Scanned every time so far. :-) G

Interesting, that's what I have and it doesn't - is it a setting somewhere?

Can only see the barcodes in the settings. What watch are you using?

I don't think it's a setting but on my 645 the Barcode Wallet definitely turns on backlight by default. Though it does turn off again and doesn't really add a huge amount of contrast when used in decent daylight.

On my Garmin 245, I have been using these apps since end of November

Barcode Wallet - by the Code Dude
parkrun barcode - by gasteropod

Both work fine. On barcode wallet, syncing an activity will sometimes give a pop-up that obscures the barcode. It's of course temporary but just need to save run & wait before you hand in your barcode.

Barcode wallet is much larger, taking up most of the screen.

FWIW - you can download the parkrun virtual volunteer app to test that it will work (or volunteer)

Android: play.google.com

IOS: apps.apple.com

(last post correcton) Not barcode wallet - sync obscures parkrun barcode (which displays a smaller barcode). Both work fine for me though - I prefer barcode wallet as it's a bit quicker / easier to scan in my limited experience

Talking to a couple of regular scanner they both said that watch barcodes tend to scan better with the scanning phone further away than you'd normally use for a physical barcode.

Just a thought: is barcode wallet turning on the backlight because the watch turns on the backlight when you press a button?

On the VA4 it's a screen swipe. And by default eg timing screens that doesn't activate back-light.

A lot of parkrunners haven't really adjusted to phone scanning - the old units needed to be pretty close, usually phones can't even focus if you stick the code too close but can pick up codes surprisingly far away.

I still prefer the wristband as it means I don't have to faff with my watch as soon as I finish and can concentrate on not dying. The watch is a fallback for when I (regularly) forget a physical barcode.
