Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

True Nellers, just look at Kane’s penalty against Denmark which was arguably just as bad as Sancho’s or Saka’s.

Like Joopsy I’m much more gutted than I thought I’d be, mainly because we have a bunch of players that I could really get behind.

If you had offered getting to the final and being unbeaten after 120 minutes we would all have taken it in a heartbeat. Southgate has definitely won me over. You can't get every decision right all the time (just look at Pep in the Champions League Final).

I’ve watched Tournaments where England did not qualify, and where we’ve exited in group, last 16, qtrs and semis.

Losing the final is better than all those. There’s been some great moments.

We don’t look lumberingly out of date and technically deficient in major tournaments now with this crop of players. That’s a genuine quantum leap of progress in 4-5 years. Good

Italy were better, as I suspected and deserve their win.

Overall I loved it. Happy days.

True TRO, speaking to my 17 year old son last night I was saying how I’d spent every tournament since Espana 82 watching the final and imagining how amazing it would be if we were still in it. We got to live that and see it through to the end and I’ve really enjoyed it.

SPR - Yes, sorry I didn't mean to imply otherwise, people are totally accountable for their behaviour and they should be jailed/fined as the law allows. And yes, you shouldn't take into account the fact racists are gonna be racist when choosing to do/not to do something.

BUT I just come up with the decision for sending a 19 year old up last to take a life defining spotkick, and if it had been my son (and most 19 year olds would probably say yes I will take it), I would have been fuming. Kane should have taken the 5th pen. He is captain (and penalty taker) for a reason. He is on all the adverts/promotions/etc. He gets paid to take that pressure.

Thr Tour de France of course Cav almost didn't go because he said he wasn't being paid to do that, to basically be the focus of all the press conferences, the extra pressure that comes with just doing his day job. He was recognising that (and completely spot on) and fair play to him for stepping up.

Re: lotteries - Penalty shootouts are won by the team taking it first 60% of the time. The very definition of a lottery, because if you win the toss, you are more likely to win.

And reading this it looks like both Rashford/Sancho were following "good practice", trying to get the keeper to commit first.

Ronaldo has been fifth before and they were out before he could kick it. Best pen last for the pressure or first pen to get you off to a good start.

I’m intending to write a penalties blog when I stop weeping so I’ll let you know my findings.

Cheg - this one contradicts my postings - so you might want to check out, but well worth a read anyway

I do note: "anecdotally, players who have been in this position have told me they like to have a bit more time on the pitch to get used to the turf, the ball and the conditions. So playing for ten, or even five minutes, would be preferred to coming on and kicking the penalty with your first touch."

But ABBA seems to be the best way of eliminating the team who kicks first having an advantage. Downside - it complicates things for spectators (and possibly players)

Ah, the beautiful game, remember that? Let's put down some jumpers and have a socially-distanced kickabout. Long shots only, and no hugging and kissing.
