Well an interesting weekend in England which was supposed to be watching some cricket, but the venue was changed and ultimately our trip to Headingley today was wasted as rain prevented a ball being bowled.
As it transpired the weekend was about watching England in Scarborough. all the bars were full and we were headed back to one of our hotel rooms (our hotel didnt have a telly in the bar) and we found a hotel with a telly and seats. The 3 scots were 4th table away from the telly with 6 english in front of us. One of whom was trollied beyond belief.
At the anthems our friend was out his seat belting out as many words of the anthem as he could remember. Then he had support with the anthem in a glaswegian drawl and a family of 4 from hamilton meant it was 7-6, or 7-7 if you counted the peter kay lookalike behind the bar.
Sothgate has in my view got a good squad together and gets the best out of the resources he has and in fact squeezes some extra out. He and the squad come across well and the anti english feeling I had had mostly gone and I was largely a neutral.
I felt southgate though changed a winning formula and instead tried to outfox italy. The plan was scupperered by scoring very early and now a lead was being defended and possession conceded to Italy. When Italy did score, england found it hard to then switch to a more offensive approach probably until 2nd half of extra time.
A draw was the fair result and it was down to whoever held their nerve.
Southgate though had overthought penalties and had a plan that with hindsight was pretty poor. 3 subs brought on just for penalties. 2 barely if at all kicked a ball in the game and were bizarrely brought on while defending a corner with 2 mins to go. This was crucial and I think the odds were against these guys from the off. I really feel for them but wonder why people like Grealish, Walker, henderson were not taking penalties. The manager should be looking in the players eyes and selecting his 5, not from a pre thought out approach.
I do feel sorry for England. but Italy over the whole tournament were probably the best team.
On the night we had some entertainment thrown in with our drunken friend and his mate from hamilton who had a hidden bottle of buckfast in his rucksack. Albeit some of the entertainment from our drunken friend was misogynistic, anti catholic and ultimately also racist.

Good summing up of the game.
Why do people get hammered? I like a beer or two but I want to see the game. My guess is they get hammered all the time anyhow.

It’s been sad to see the scenes today as it’s marred what has been a good tournament overall

Grealish wanted to take a penalty apparently, but was not selected.

Saka was brought on to change the shape and score in normal time. He played for 50 minutes before hitting his penalty. He was rubbish but he wasn’t brought on solely to take a pen.

I've been the goalkeeper in a penalty shootout, in the final. We lost. I was injured on one side, so couldn't get down to them. I think I'd done enough to help get the team there, that they weren't unhappy.

re: Grealish - apparently he lied. You can lip-read on the video who Southgate says, Pickford was next then Phillips.

Believe it or not it was the drunk English guy. The weegie was a hun but didn’t indulge in that nonsense.
Ok. I willl give you saka if you give me sancho and rashFord. Still a big ask of a lad of his age and experience.
