HowFar?
Wine Legs just constantly talking about Katie doing 3 laps did get me thinking about the mental side of training / racing. I know when I was running, I had a couple of friends who were much more experienced than I was and they would talk casually about me running some distance in a particular time - as if it was a perfectly natural thing for me to be able to do at some point in the future. I was nowhere near the times at that point, but they seemed to think it was inevitable so it didn't seem impossible to me. I also remember doing some hard track sessions when training for the marathon. The idea behind the session was to get used to running at target marathon pace with tired legs. The session was made up of 25 laps of the track, alternating between target marathon pace for one lap and then 5k pace for the next lap and so on. I had done a couple of these sessions before my coach casually mentioned that when the laps dropped below target pace, I should jog a lap to recover a bit before carrying on. He hadn't bothered telling me that I was alloed to let the pace drop - so I hadn't. That's a much less impressive version of the story about the fireman who won some Ultra race in Australia. The event took place over several days. At the end, they asked him, as winner, what his strategy had been for sleeping. He looked at them, a little bit surprised, and confessed that he didn't know that he had been allowed to go to sleep! |
