Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Should we have a league variable that getting a brilliant means automatic promotion?

It was the recent game against MrD (JamHam14 v MrDFetch). Still not seeing what was particularly great about it. Perhaps the engine was a bit drunk that day.

I think he hits the nail on the head when he says just because a level 3000 cyborg thinks it’s a bad move it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a bad move at your level.

Interesting video though he moves way to quick for me to really follow it.

My game with Smugbloke was a bit odd at the end, it gave me mistakes on the last few moves which lead to mate.

Possibly the knight capture on f5 from e2 made a space for your queen to escape to if attacked by white playing Bg2 then Nd5.
The alternative of moving your queen to the only available square e5 to escape from the pawn on f5 would allow that sequence.
It’s awfully complicated though, but obviously ‘brilliant’

I don't know about brilliant but I think the reasoning is that if you instead move your queen to the only available square which is e5, then Bb2 gives white a very strong attack (eg threatening Nd5 uncovering an attack on the queen again).

That idea's becoming clearer with those explanations, thanks! But of course, that level of thought was far from my mind. I think it was simply "Damn, I can't recapture with the queen.... oh, that knight'll do it!"

Click the magnifying glass to follow the suggested line Salty.

Hopefully you don't pull off a brilliant move in our game ;-)

Salty - Interestingly, when I do a game report on the same game, it simply comes out as best rather than brilliant. Odd.

The analysis engine is surprisingly poor. It seems to rate moves as good if they are even within one point of the best move. Which means you can turn a win into a loss very quickly while playing good moves!

I say surprisingly because these days any old chess computer can slaughter me easily. It wasn’t like that 40 years ago. So I’m not sure why they don’t have a better engine.
