Yeah, this is my point. I've been a couple of times before, so would really rather not add to that. Orkney and Shetland are great, but by the time you've paid for the van and a couple of passengers onto the ferry you could have paid for a trip to the south of France.

So the proper northern jocks can possibly help me out here. As a little boy I did a week in a 2cv camping around Tongue. I had to look on a map to see where it was. Is it still remote and quiet all the way up there ?

Just thinking too... do people use campsites? I guess if I turned up somewhere busy and there are vans in laybys everywhere, having a booked slot at a campsite would make me feel less of a nuisance.

You're pretty much right on the NC500 there Gobi, so a lot busier than it used to be. I remember driving it and seeing two cars 20 years ago.

We use sites, but tend to go for the same ones, rather than big company run ones

We have had our camper a year now! Last August we managed 2 weeks away touring, we worked our way through Lincolnshire, Yorkshire, Northumberland and Scotland and back down again, nothing was booked, we did do quite a few campsites RunningRonnie! I was running every day at 5am in a different place! Best holiday I’ve ever had!

Sounds amazing Limegreen...
Fancy doing your running on holiday again this week?? 80 WSW squares in a morning? I'll never catch that! LMAO
I've been in some very nice campsites with a tent, so I think I'd be keen to use some in the van too.

Ronnie - we very rarely use campsites, but then we use our van as a base for fell-running and mountain trekking, so tend to go to more remote spots. Things are changing though, local residents are much less tolerant of wild camping. I've seen that in the Lakes very recently and also here in Yorkshire.
