Auto Sleeper was a brand we looked at quite closely during the phase where we were convinced we wanted a motorhome rather than a campervan. I think they are well thought of and quite durable. Are you looking at a minibus/Peugeot Boxer size (e.g. Symbol or Warwick) or small coachbuilt (e.g. Nuevo)?

It’s one of the really old school VW clubman with the overhead storage 2x single beds ... we’re waiting to hear how much of a bargain it might be before getting too excited by it but would be nice to think we’d be giving the old girl a good home, the current owners have had her from new and travelled all over Europe in her which we’d also like to think we’d do in the future ... once the whole of Europe has been vaccinated of course 😂😂

I'd say knowing its provenance and possibly also having an idea about how well it's been serviced and looked after (if you do) is worth a fair bit against going out into the open market for an older vehicle. And it sounds as if it might be a good way of trying this whole motorhome lark without committing huge funds to it.

Mandy - which company did you use for your map? Always nice to hear of people having good reliability and performance from a map.

Was a small local one in Folkestone, Kent - DVT Tuning. Really knew his stuff and explained it all in plain English.

That sounds good. I had my Audi done at Tunit near Bolton and I recommend them, the other end of the country to you of course. I've been thinking about taking my van there too, but it would only be for a very mild map and I'm not sure the increase would be worth it.

Is getting a conversion done instead of hunting for a van to buy a good option? We found a company where you choose the base van, select from a bunch of options (all chargeable) and they build the van to your specification.
I'd imagine it's an expensive way of doing it, but wondering if it's worthwhile as there are very few vans on the market. There seem to be plenty nearly new or very old old vans, nothing in the mid-range.
I'm surprised actually at the number of vans that are converted from normal, empty vans. I had assumed that vans were built to be campervans originally.

We purchased ours as a panel van. Was about 14 months old when we brought it. Paid someone to put the windows in for us, but other than that we have converted it ourselves. OH is a very hands on person. There are companies out there who supply all the ready made units etc in various designs, we used Evo Designs. The flooring can brought cut to size and shape. It really depends on what you want and how comfortable you are with doing things. We worked it out that it was cheaper to buy a panel van and have it converted than buy an already converted van. We didn't skimped on the things we wanted and are over the moon with the van. We also worked out that we probably saved half the price of converting it by doing it ourselves.

There's new rules about how you register van conversions which (I think) might have an impact on expenses. I haven't read all about it.
I was absolutely amazed at how many vans were on the roads in Scotland last Summer/Autumn - it was absolutely hoachin'. I assume they would have mostly be in Europe in previous years? Lots and lots of mid-range vans which are simply not being sold at the moment, or are commanding eye-watering prices if they are.
