Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Accepted wisdom is that they hold their value well, so that may be a factor in whether you want to own it after 5 years or pay the difference.

Our friends had a second hand VW California for 5 years and used it to go to music festivals, football events, weekends at the coast and as a day-to-day vehicle for transporting lots of stuff. They sold it last year for £1,000 less than they paid for it.

Second hand values of good VW T5s and T6s are incredibly good right now. I bought ours in 2014 as an ex-demo, it's got 37,000 on the clock and I think I could confidently expect to sell it for about £36K, perhaps more. I bought it for £42K so not as good as Scribbs' friend, but pretty good all the same.

I must admit I did consider selling it, but to be honest I'd only want to replace it with a newer version of the same!

Yeah, my sensible head is with the older van. It's a great asset in 5 years when fully paid up.

Changing subject for a moment, does anyone have any thoughts on how often you should be charging leisure batteries up? I guess that's assuming you're not driving the van much .... if it's your daily driver, I don't suppose it matters.

NE, the auto spark at the place we bought our van advised us to charge battery from mains at least once per month for 24 hrs. along with a 40-50 min drive once per week

Hmm, that sounds reasonable. I've just been reading on the Cali forums of the horrific cost of replacing both leisure batteries and I'd like to extend their lives as much as possible. I've just been out and plugged it in!

p.s. I am also trying to take it out once a week and get the oil warm enough to burn off any crankcase condensation.

How often do they need replacing? How expensive?
