Even in last weekend's Caravan/moho club site we witnessed folks driving around with waste water open and emptying toilet cassettes down an ordinary drain.
I just don't get that sort of behaviour

But what they do do is shop locally and eat and drink in the town.
Everyone had to do this imho, money spent local stays local.

But what they do do is shop locally and eat and drink in the town. Everyone had to do this imho, money spent local stays local. One of the reported problems with the North Coast 500, apparently. Folks stock up their huge motor home cruisers at a cheap supermarket in the Central Belt, or maybe even Inverness, and then add very little to the local economy on their way round. I have no proof, it’s just scuttlebutt.

Meanwhile,
It seems that the bigger your rig, the more you carry with you. Generators, bikes and motorbikes, Dyson, huge deckchairs, barbecue...
What kind of license do you need to drive one of those monsters?!

That’s what I’ve heard as well AC. All the traffic and visitors takes a toll on the local roads, facilities and nature but it’s not necessarily offset by money coming in.

C1 for 3.5 to 7.5(?) those of us who passed our tests before Jan 97 got that automatically
I drove a small bus-sized moho one day, many years ago, in France. Never, ever again!

So, smaller than 7.5t. Seems practical (for us auldies). Same as horse boxes and most removal vans.
As an aside, it seems I got “robbed” last year. Apparently, back in ye bygone days of yore, one used to also get an HGV ticket when passing the bus test. Before the government worked out they were missing out on revenue by making you test twice for the same size of vehicle. So I’m now qualified to drive a tri-axle coach with nearly 70 people and luggage on board at 60mph down the motorway, but I can’t drive a truck delivering washing machines for Rumbelows. Madness.

I have no proof, it’s just scuttlebutt. I have also heard exactly the same thing. A friend did the NC500 last year and encountered a fair degree of hostility in various places, clearly it's an emotive subject.

I'm glad we did NC500 back in 2017, before it got too busy. It was tricky enough in a car along the single track roads in early April back then; I hate to imagine how slow it would be now. I've heard tales about motorhome drivers - typically it seems to be those who have hired a van for their holiday - who have no consideration for other road users and who don't camp responsibly (leaving later and waste 😡). No wonder the locals are fed up.

shopping local and using independent pubs, cafes and tearooms is part of the fun of travelling - but can get expensive so we mix and match with meals precooked at home
