jelly (limegreenjelly)
Sled runner, Mr Jelly say if you are plugged into the mains at home you should have a low wattage electric heater, we had these long tubes we used to use in the yacht, but having the webasto on is perfectly safe!

Thanks for the replies! We are hooked up to the house but I don't think there is any electric heating in the van. Our el is about 10p/kWh. At least I feel fairly confident we can run with a little diesel for now.

These are ‘external’ electric heaters we bought although mr jelly does say you have trust your webasto is safe, he’s an ex hgv driver and says you would have the heating on all night if you were there so you would also trust it to be ok if you weren’t there!

Yes! Jelly says what I was trying to say. Europe is totally full of truckers sleeping with a diesel cab-heater to cosset them. No reason to worry as long as it's well maintained.

But I've never heated a 'van we weren't in. Perhaps I've misunderstood the question and we're talking at cross-purposes?

Very good points re hgv heating, I hadn't thought of that. I did mean leaving a bit of heat on when not occupied, yes, just to keep it a bit above freezing, even though everything is drained. Now I am saying I am superstitious as well as ignorant ;)

We don't heat ours, but I would lean towards a small internal electric trickle heater of some sort (run off the domestic electricity supply/hookup) rather than the diesel heater if I wanted to keep it warm when empty. No particular reason, but it just feels like something that you could set up and leave for a few days.

All I want for Christmas is Woo
Mr Woo used to leave an electric greenhouse heater on in the caravan through the winter (the van was hooked up to the house). It did the trick perfectly.
