Many lapwing breed and overwinter inland. I associate them at least as much with high pasture land and freshwater as estuarine conditions. They are fabulous birds of wild 'big sky' country. If I drove the six miles or so to Skipton from home now I'd be amazed if I didn't see any nerd Look out for the closely related golden plover too. Smaller (slightly) and more likely seen higher up. The breed inland in the Dales too

There is a Great Tit in the garden. Actually update, there are a pair of Great Tit's.

That's moderately rare, usually Blue Tit's.

We aren't terribly high up, about 60m above sea level, but it's mostly large arable fields around here. I will keep my ears open for golden plovers.

I've seen lapwings here, frequently. Peewits my dad would call them, after the sound they make. They also have a weird very flappy flight.

Yesterday I think I had the whole range of garden birds in a very short space, blue, great, coal and long tailed tits, robin, blackbird. Ok, not quite the who,e range but a lot at one go!

I never came across them as a child, the countryside near home was mostly woods and orchards.

I'm doubting my identification now as the birds were only making one syllable calls, not a pee-wit noise. But I have an app on my phone with sound clips and that gave one syllable calls for lapwings. Do they do both?

They also make a weird squeaky sound, a bit like electrical interference I think!

I'm teaching my nephew about peewits, he is two and can't say lapwing.

A first for me today, up Conwy Mountain and came across a chough, then I got a lovely flypast as it went back to feed. Dare I say I was chuffed? ;)
