They were regular garden birds when I was a boy, but we hardly ever see them in our garden now (although they sing in trees close by). Having said that, I have actually heard and seen more song thrushes this year on my little local jaunts than I usually do.

Two interesting things today. First one was a call I didn’t recognise. Merlin said blackbird and then I saw a magpie helping itself to what must have been the contents of momma blackbird’s nest. Obviously an alarm call.

Second one was a crow and a parakeet both mobbing a heron as they flew overhead.

Slightly puzzling birdsong on a run in the country a couple of days ago. I was passing a really dense thicket where I've often heard miscellaneous warblers in the past (perfect place for them) when I heard a quite subdued song which sounded to all intents and purposes like something between a sedge warbler and a song thrush - typically an inventive phrase repeated once then another and so on. Merlin refused to engage for quite a while and then blackcap popped up, not sure whether as an identification for the bird in question or another one nearby (there were lots around). So my assumption is that it was a blackcap doing some of kind of mimicry, probably of a song thrush.

We have a local thrush that sings his heart out every night, he really is quite prolific.

J2R or something mimicking a blackcap? Maybe a thrush? :-) I've never heard of a blackcap being a mimic?

Had a song thrush wander along a farm track in front of the van today, seemingly oblivious to being squashed. And a fledgling blackbird in a back garden that might have fledged a bit too early as it was stuck low down and trying to get back into the bushes where its parents were shouting.

A fledgling green woodpecker flew out of the undergrowth on our walk yesterday and got himself tangled in a chain link fence. He managed to wriggle free then took off and flew across the piece of land before hitting a fence on the other side of the land about 50m away - probably not long for this world 😢

We have a large tree in our garden. A tree surgeon just came round on behalf of SSE and wants to prune it back away from the power lines. The shape of the tree makes it obvious that this has been done in the past. Apparently it needs done every 4 years or so.

He thinks it will be done "next month." Will there likely be a big disturbance to nesting birds working on something like that at this time of the year or do I assume they know what they are doing?

Some birds including iirc blackbird have two or three broods. July would be better I’d think

flanker, this article is very good: sussexwildlifetrust.org.uk

"Blackcap's are also adept mimics and other than producing Blackbird-esque vocals, will frequently imitate other warblers (particularly Garden, Reed and Whitethroat), Song Thrush and Nightingale (hence the confusion)."

The song was a lot more rapid than a song thrush, and also much more subdued. Also the habitat, thick scrub, was pure warbler and not song thrush territory (they normally sing from tree perches).
