Siskins on the seed feeder this morning, the first I've seen in the garden in ages. March does seem to be the time they come, though, I imagine when food like alder seeds in surrounding countryside has finally run out.

Yeah, we've had a few siskins this year; sharing the niger seeds with the goldfinches. Very exciting to see them.

I think wet weather makes accessing the birch and alder seed more difficult... and by now it is definitely running out.
Loads of skylarks round here over the weekend, and lots of chiffchaff. Curlew, lapwing and oystercatcher all active.

Interesting to see them side by side with goldfinches. I always thought they were the same size, but in fact they are clearly slightly smaller, very small in fact for a finch.

Yes siskins are smaller than goldfinches. When we have greenfinch and siskin fights for seeds it is quite funny as the siskins often win even though they are much smaller š
I get the feeling like robins they are quite aggressive.
Nothing new today so far, but we did pick up a willow warbler on merlin yesterday. Don't know if that's a false reading though as not had it before.

I suspect golfinches are more sociable and live in flocks. So, other than occasional squabbles, are used to and expect to take turns at feeders. The siskins & greenfinches obviously don't have the same outlook and (at least here) frustrate the goldfinches because they just hog the feeders and don't take any hints to move aside.

Like with most things thereās a pecking order usually based on size or just feistiness. Goldfinch are generally cautious visitors at the best of times with at least one bird keeping an eye out for threats. Not sure about Siskin but they arenāt big birds

The siskins at home are quite feisty. I noticed one yesterday trying to bully a redpoll off the feeder but the redpoll wasn't shifting for anyone.

Greenfinch are the truculent ones here. They don't move for any of the small birds, although are put off by squirrels and great spotted woodpeckers. Blue tits and great tits do OK, though, as they dart in, pick out a sunflower seed and then fly off to eat it. They don't stay on the feeder.
