I’ve seen reports of GSW drumming on other things than natural trees and have now seen and heard one making an unusual sound on a local telegraph pole. Not the usual loud echoey sound but quieter and higher pitched

I wasn’t looking for birds today, as I was trying out a new bicycle. From the roads I saw siskin, big flock of greylag in a field and big buzzards - bigger than down south. I’m just outside Elgin at the moment.

Skiing in Austria at the moment. Yesterday I was having coffee on the terrace of a mountain restaurant and a golden eagle flew over. Today, having lunch at a different mountain restaurant, I was pleased to see a nuthatch on a feeder hanging outside, but then delighted to see a crested tit make a visit a couple of times! Super little birds. When we got back to the town, I saw my first hirundines of the year, some martins flying overhead which could have been either house martins or crag martins (a common enough occurrence in Alpine towns and villages), I couldn't tell.

All that would’ve made my day, J2R. Lovely spots.

I went chiff hunting in the rain. Fail - apparently they don't like the wet around here!

I did nearly fall in the canal in surprise though, when the loudest GSW ever started up right above my head 🤣
