Red Squirrel
I’m back at base and have revised the duck spot - wigeon, not pochard. Lots of ‘em. There was a small grey wader too which I think is a winter plumage knot - a couple of those separately on their own.
Finn - it would make sense for the pair to be curlews but I’ve scrutinised pictures on bird sites and the curlew is more pale on its underside.

Whimbrel is 2/3 size curlew and has marked stripes on head. Odd bird over winters but best chance to see is during migration in spring and autumn - April and late August are good. Very distinct call. Colour of curlew varies on plumage i.e., time of year, and light conditions / viewing angle

They must have been curlews. The black bits on the wing threw me a bit. The heads were hard to see as they both had them tucked under their wings (sleeping?) until a crow came along and hassled them and I could see the beaks, but didn’t particularly notice stripes.
I also saw some small, dull plumage birds with long tails. Could they be rock pipits?

Not a bird (well I did notice at least lapwing and curlew) but lots of frog spawn in the middle of the path on the Haworth Hobble route today.

I'm currently at Slimbridge and their first ones were reported last Monday and seen later going to roost further up the Severn.
