When I was a kid, we had regular nuthatch (and treecreeper) visitors in the garden but we lived on the back of a large enough wood.
I honestly can't remember the last time I saw one.

DT, there are a couple of areas nearby where if I keep my eye on one or two large old oak trees, there's a very good chance that a treecreeper will show up. They seem to favour old oaks.

I've seen then in the past but not where we live now. They're a great wee species 🤎

Ickworth House in Suffolk had masses of both treecreepers and nuthatches on the great oak trees near the house last year.

Nuthatches have a very loud call for their size.

I was standing being patient while my dog does his usual sniffing around, when I suddenly realised there was a Treecreeper at head height on a tree just three metres away, working it's way up the trunk. Our roles were then reversed as it was the dog trying to get me to move on.

Was away for the weekend, down to Keswick in the Lakes. The hotel had feeders outside the window, so had breakfast next to millions of birds... including a nuthatch. First one I've seen.

Not seen a nuthatch for a few years - we had a pair visiting regularly about 45 years ago, but not seen one since. I’ve just been watching a goldcrest hop about in the magnolia - I often hear them but very rarely see one

Stood watching a dozen or so Long Tailed Tits this morning on the dog walk. Always guaranteed to put a smile on your face
