we had a pair visiting regularly about 45 years

Should say 4-5, not 45!

I was watching long tailed tits in the centre of Newcastle last week, at dusk, feeding in a few trees near m&s. I thought they might be pied wags at first; they seem keen on city centre roosts, but they were definitely LTTs.

The few people who noticed me staring, clearly assumed I was mad.

LTTs are indeed gorgeous little birds. I love the way they move round in little swarms, always calling to each other. Distinctive sounds they make, different from other tits.

A huge V of gaggling geese heading northwards on my walk home tonight. Far too dark, far too high to work out what type of geese they were but quite a cacophony and sight.

I did wonder from some of your previous posts but I'd be none the (informed) wiser otherwise. Saw what I thought was a decent V (with a tiny reserve squadron in the slipstream) on Saturday afternoon heading either east or west, but I'd say tonight's was 5x the size.

LTTs also crowd our feeder at specific times of day. Its glorious. One stays on watch and they rest eat for a few moments then they disappear until the afternoon. Lovely things.

Both in Darlington. Think Saturday's flock was heading east inland. Tonight was a northern-bound passage.

Pinkies arrive in the UK in autumn but move around in search of food

rspb.org.uk

There's a recording of their call above, but it sounds like a big flock on land rather than their in flight contact sounds
