Saw some terns in central Newcastle this weekend. Anyone know what type? The kittiwakes have been here for years but this is the first time I've seen terns. Easy to see from the quayside, Millennium Bridge area.

Did a good deed birdwise yesterday and helped to rescue a young long-eared owl which had fallen from its tree. We decided it would be better not to touch it - there was quite impressive hissing going on if we got closer than a couple of metres anyway. We were out cycling with no means of transport and after a few phone-calls found someone local to take a look. He checked it over (uninjured) and popped it back up the tree with the help of a ladder and some impressive acrobatics in the branches.

Here it is - not a great pic. sorry.

I'm struggling with an id for this one. Flapping it's wings far more than most, but maybe that's because there's not many feathers?

A young stonechat? Or an extremely OAP and not well stonechat? Or something else?

Young blue tits always look like a 'sketch' to me like they haven't been coloured in yet. This stonechat has the same appearence. The other thing to have in mind with birds is the time of year. What's the agenda but also what's been happening. Many adult birds have been busy breeding / rearing young and will be miulting now. Their old feathers are knackered basically. I think young stonechat though

Dede moRobz 🎅 My guess would be Arctic Terns. I might get a chance to have a look in the next few days, if they're still around.

So more a knackered worn out parent than true OAP DT? (I have known the feeling)
I assume feldglings go through a moult at some point to lose the fluff that makes them look bigger than the parents?

There are also some little tern breeding colonies on the North Sea coast. There's definitely one at Crimdon, between Seaham and Hartlepool, and some sort of protected colony at North Gare just south of Seaton Carew.
