Roseates on Coquet, too, but balance of probability says Arctic, then Common.

As an aside, how far inland would you expect to see terns?

I think common tern can show up on any inland water bodies, the others less so.

There are breeding colonies of common terns up the Thames at least as far as Maidenhead and by then you’re quite a long way from the sea!
Incidentally, last Tuesday I heard a cuckoo around Maidenhead. He was clearly not abiding by the words of the song! I’ve heard so many this year and in so many different places. Unfortunately that’s probably due to my retirement from work rather than an encouraging increase in cuckoo numbers.

and now I think about it last night I was in Reading and there were loads of terns on the river. Even further from the sea!

There is a breeding colony of Common Terns on the JCB site at Rocester near Uttoxeter. It's difficult to get much further from the sea in the UK. Around 20 miles to the SE is Coton-in-the-Elms (nr Lichfield) that is always quoted as the point in the UK farthest from the sea.

Terns are seen passing by the local still waters here. The gravel pits in the Otley area are a fair way from the sea

The peregrines on our local church tower have fledged a female, and it took off into the world while I was on holiday. The poor thing struggled in the heat, got exhausted and collapsed in the churchyard. The fire brigade came out and put her back up on the roof. She rested in the shade for a bit and then took off onto the roost area on the tower.

Stormy weather pushes birds way off course at times. It's not uncommon for kittiwakes to turn up here in Brontë country a long way from their natural home. Similiarly GBBG. Shags sadly are rare for many local birders fnarr, fnarr
