Merlin told me I had a green winged teal in my front garden. If it was correct then it looked and sounded remarkably like a blackbird 😂

Red Squirrel
J2R wrote: Exciting, Red Squirrel! Grey partridges seem few and far between these days. I've never seen a flock of them, only isolated ones and twos. I am assured I saw a green-winged teal today on the north Norfolk coast (pointed out to me by a couple of birders with scopes), although it looked just like the other teals to me (which, it has to be said, also have green wings, or least the speculum is green!). I'll never make a proper twitcher. They’ve been noticeable by their absence up here in Moray for quite a few years, although recently a few of my family members have been seeing them. I’d not seen a flock before and I tried to walk past carefully, but they took off. I didn’t realise partridges flew so high. |

it was a bit warmer and brighter today in Berks but nothing like SL of course! Lovely. Had a lovely few hours at Dinton Pastures. Lots of hilarious Snipe on ice, a very noisy yet very elusive Water Rail and even a Merlin-aided close-up Firecrest. Some bizarre GSW action where it clearly couldn't feed directly from the feeders so spent the whole time dive-bombing every other bird with the intent of getting them to drop their food. Not seen that before. Anyway, posting mainly as I know this thread loves a warbler.... ....I came across a small group of 5-6 warblers sitting in a sunlit tree over-hanging the river Loddon, hunting flycatcher-style. I noted the strip across the eye and the gentle yellow colouration but needed to get home to identify. All my books said that nothing like that is here in the winter. Went over to social media and it's full of folks posting Chiffchaff photos today. Seems like they over-winter quite commonly down here nowadays. Nice to learn something, sad to realise the most recent of my books was published in 1999, lol! I suppose the sunshine has brought them out and they'll be singing soon. BTW, did anyone catch the Chiffchaff song starring on University Challenge over Xmas? |

Not a bird (obvs) but twice this week I’ve seen foxes strolling round town like they own the place - one patiently waiting for a gap in the traffic to cross the road. He was very handsome with a huge brush and looked well fed.
