Dozens of pheasants, the hoot of what seemed an extremely distant owl, a brief shrill call of a curlew and one solitary toad on tonight’s run.

Toads all over the paths here last night. Made for some slalom running and sudden big steps!

Interesting overlap of winter/spring yesterday on the bird front. Still Goldeneye, Redwing and Fieldfares here but also plenty of Chiffs, Grebes mating and nest building and up on the Moors round Hathersage plenty of Curlews displaying and calling overhead.

My clients, ok rather large, pond contained THOUSANDS of mating toads last week. We could not quite believe it so counted a few sections, rounded down, multiplied, rounded down...
Of course they come from miles away to mate in water, then leave.
My toads are still in hibernation and haven't been to my small pond yet...

Interesting if not exciting spot - a juvenile mute swan has appeared on our local stretch of canal, the first swan I've seen there in 3 years.

I saw a small flock of fieldfare earlier on the week. I’ve been down to the East Midlands today and everywhere I stopped the car had a singing chiffchaff (in fairness one was a small nature reserve car park near one of my customers, where I’d stopped for our Tuss to have a leg stretcher)

Cheeky’s Dad
There was a somewhat confused Tawny hooting in the woods next to my place of work at half two this afternoon. Little bit disconcerting, in daylight hours.

Bizarrely we had a tawny hooting in the wood behind the house this afternoon in bright sunshine. OH thought it might be something to do with nesting “or is that barn owls?”

Also saw & heard my first curlew of the year this morning 😁

Seems the chiffs are avoiding me. Still not heard one.

Nearly trod on a grouse the other evening. Not sure which of us was the most scared.
