"My" young male sparrowhawk is back. Unfortunately, or fortunately, he is improving his hunting skills. I was alerted to his presence by the alarm calls of the sparrows. It looked like they'd all escaped as he was pottering on the ground with nothing. However he then dived into the hedge and came out with a male sparrow. Really interesting hunting, if a little sad. But I still cant get over just how small he is compared to any other sparrowhawk I've seen in the past. It seemed to be a bit of a struggle to take the sparrow off.

That’s excellent, DT. My garden has been much more mundane in comparison. My mob of starlings returned today. Quite nice to see them with adult plumage. They hadn’t been in the garden for a while.

I've moved next to a big, green cemetery with a nature reserve at the side of it. Lots of jays harvesting goodies from the trees. There are also green woodpeckers in residence. I saw one shooting through the air like a rocket, with its wings held to its side. I really love greenies.

That sounds a great place to be Red. If you’re staying a while next spring should be good

We had a jay in our back garden today, quite a rare occurrence despite there being plenty of woodland around.
