Must be. I searched for oak galls but these things look more like lumps of chewed toffee.

Same reason apple yields are down. When pollination was required it was bliddy freezing and nothing was flying. As a result the likes of Blue Tit first broods were down as there were no insects available to feed the young on.

Definitely the case here, got about two crumbles worth off the apple and pear trees. Post breeding both trees are very popular with all kind of tits, including a couple of blue tits, but back in the season only saw one fledgling blue tits.

It was mentioned on Springwatch how the cold, wet weather meant there weren’t so many caterpillars on the oak trees, so blue tit broods we’re struggling. It stuck in my mind as the very next day I saw a very bedraggled blue tit with a caterpillar in its beak on an oak tree. |

We saw the Snow Bunting! Flinky and phal and Dave outing 😀 (not specifically for the Snow Bunting - that was a Bonus!) Also wigeon and pochard and pintail and other feathery things 😀 |

I have seen a bird a bit like that in my back garden, however I am pretty certain it was a leucistic goldfinch.
