I’ve seen them a couple of times around NE Lancs. One sighting was by the canal, which having seen them in that London previously was even odder than the urban Colne sighting

The bird feeder has been stupidly busy today. We got hold of some more squirrel food and moved that to the end of the garden and it seems to have drawn most of the squirrels away from the bird food. Lots of sparrows, robins, coal tits, blue tits, blackbirds, dunnocks, pigeons and magpies today. At one point there were four birds all on the feeders at once which is very much a record for us!

We got mobbed at one point by about 30 starlings. Also today, first sight of fledgling goldfinches, and also first 2020 sighting of siskins.
Do they migrate later than others? Or has the recent hot weather kept them elsewhere?

Maybe a silly question, but when the fledgings leave the nest do they return? Or are they self-sufficient from then on. Only 3 blackbirds in the nest since first thing this morning..

panad - I’m no expert, but blackbirds here (SE Wilts) seem to ‘semi-fledge’ and hop around for up to a week self feeding and still being fed by the parents. Often they look bigger than the parents.

Parakeets already in several areas around Manchester - large "crowd" around Didsbury that are vocal supporters of the local parkrun.

Sorry, but no idea if they return to the nest or sleep out.

Um, we’ve had several broods of blackbirds in our garden. The young seem to spend the nights on the ground around the shrubs and plants in the flower borders. It’s been fascinating watching how they develop, with the adult (normally male) feeding them initially, then they feed themselves and finally, the adult chasing them off to find their own patch. This presumably to leave enough room for the next brood. I think we’re now seeing the fourth set of young now.

Fledged young birds don't "go back home"! They may stay in the vicinity but their nest tenancy is over! Um....Siskins breed widely throughout the UK though less so in Central England. It wouldn't be migration yet and they wouldn't be late winter migrants returning. Kingfisher this morning while on run. Three Whitethroats.
