Wow fledgling Fieldfares that's something special in the UK, never mind in your garden. A BTO report on Fieldfares that I saw recently suggested that in any one year there are only a handful of 10km squares in the UK where breeding is confirmed. You might want to look into contacting the local county ornithological society and letting them know for their records.

I think I fall in one of the 10K squares, looking ta the map I found with a bit of googling - but I've never seen one in the garden at any time of the year, nor have I seen any around recently.

The goldfinch and blue tits are costing me a fortune in seeds and fatballs. Just watched three goldfinch tell a jackdaw that it had to wait in the queue a little longer, it retired to the plum tree and did just that :)

We have them all the time in our garden...especially when the cooking apples (don’t know variety, other than not brambly and absolutely gorgeous (nicer than brambly)) are ripe...

Looks like my bat was probably either a Whiskered or a Brandt's. They are very similar and were only separated as species in 1970. Both are found in Derbyshire but statistically it's more likely to be a Whiskered.

ff - almost certainly a jackdaw. No remains, the sparrowhawk took the body with it, just a carpet of dark grey under feathers / down. All consistently dark grey near black, no lighter shades and no pure black.

I have not examined too many dead jackdaws, but don't know of any other birds like that?

Odd though - because the web implies jackdaws fight back - and mostly win - and attack as a mob even if one is caught. So maybe it was an ex-jackdaw before the hawk got it? We didn't hear any loud disruption.

The Scribbler
I could hear the young bird but couldn't see it until a man walking in the park spotted my camera and told me where to stand to get a better view. The young bird kept sticking its head out demanding to be fed, so it was just a matter of waiting and trying to keep the long lens stable pointing up at the tree.

Great shot Scribbs. And yes, patience is needed. As well as a bit of local, and behavioural knowledge.

I think this is one of the storks they introduced to the Knepp Castle Estate in Ashington, West Sussex last year. My wife & I had just been for a walk in the Angmering Estate Woods & walked back home home via Patching Pond, which is where I took this photo.
