Swifts screeching round the village today.

And some house martins (I think) sitting on a wire having a very noisy conversation!

Great surprise this morning, a new species for our garden. We had a juvenile linnet on one of the sunflower seed feeders. Wasn't sure it was that at first, had to look it up to confirm, but got a very good view, got my binoculars on it. I didn't know that linnets ever turned up in suburban gardens (although they're certainly present in the countryside round here), and I've only ever really seen them in flocks, so it's all rather puzzling. Couldn't really have been anything else, though.

Linnets have become scarce in my immediate locality J23 and don't think I've ever had one in my garden. (I'll check!). Just 400 metres away from my house as the bird flies I saw a male Stonechat in the same place where I've seen it on several occasions this last month--carrying food--- so could be breeding.

I would be doubtful about the linnet identification myself, as it doesn't seem possible, but I don't really see what else it could have been. Smallish finch/bunting, paler underneath than above, with striations on a slightly reddish breast and a grey beak. We've had redpolls in the garden before but this was slghtly bigger with no red at all on the head.

Incidentally, about 5 miles from here I once saw (in winter) the largest flock of linnets I've ever seen, many thousands of them completely covering a set of trees and hedges. A rather wonderful farmer there plants crops specially for winter feed for wild birds, and they certainly like to take advantage. That's still a long way from my house, though, and a completely different habit, so it doesn't make it any less puzzling.
