Out this morning around the usual dog walking area and saw two Whitethroat flying around together between long grass/reeds and an Oak tree.

Tonight on the dog walk I saw the sad, sullen sight of a great tit, wings at right angles, eyes closed in the middle of a country road. As I approached, I realised it wasn't dead. I picked it up, and it clung on to my gloves so desperately I couldn't extricate myself. It opened its eyes and redoubled its grip. I didn't know where to leave it, first I caused an impromptu stampede of cattle as I headed to a farm gate, next I thought the tall grassy verge, but it just seemed like a scavengers pantry, so at last I put it on the mossy stone wall in between some small grass, and carefully pried its claws off my glove, I left it watching me as I retreated. I don't suppose it will have a happy ending, but you can wish for one can't you?

Had a couple of redpolls on the niger seed this morning with the siskins. And a GSW has become a regular on the peanuts; must have a local nest. First baby house sparrows are being fed, too.

Always a dilemma Chrisull..whether to assist as best we can or to let nature take its course. Getting fed up with nothing but regular Cetti's and Redd Warblers along my trail run--ok, there are the other usuals but nothing much of note. Long Tailed Tits in the garden which is unusual for me at this time of year. Hawthorn blossom in garden now with its usual pink tinge prior to the confetti like fall which will happen soon. Bluebells all faded now. |

We've had the pink tinge for the first time on our new hawthorns this year Steve. Nothing new here, although did see a couple of predators hovering above the A55 (unfortunately whilst driving), but not too sure what they were, looked a little big for sparrowhawks, gutted I couldnt get a better look. Back out with work all around Denbighshire Moor again this afternoon, so eyes still peeled to catch my first sight of a local Red Kite. |

Yep I don't often intervene, but my wife and I thought leaving in middle of road wasn't nature, it would have been run down within minutes. The wall seemed the best bet, high enough, if it was stunned it could fly, and away from immediate predators. If it died there from shock, well a more peaceful end than a tractor.

When driving into the Children's Trust at Tadworth, my wife and I saw a blackbird and sparrow at the side of the road. Both were motionless with their heads up as we stopped next to them. I thought they were ornaments until one of them blinked. As it happened, they were just sunning themselves and it fooled us both! My office currently has some peregrine falcons who have just had four chicks. A web cam has been set up for those interested... beta.merton.gov.uk |

Back from my bike ride and I saw 2 large yellow woodpeckers (completely different places) and can't work out which kind they are, definitely lots of yellow. I was then cycling along a lane, looked up and saw my first swallows. |
