Are there any Crinkle Crags experts here? A couple of weeks back I was Birkett-bagging around Langdale and did a thorough north-south ridge scramble along Crinkle Crags, the idea being to sweep up all the Birketts in one go. I've been trying to work out which top was what and well, it's been a bit confusing and I could do with some other brains looking at it and giving me their thoughts.

Actually, it's more than a bit confusing. Bill Birkett and Mark Richards* classify them south to north, while Wainwright mixes up both conventions.I think that Tim [Synge] recognises 4 of them on table 4c but one of these is the otherwise unnamed summit to the north of Shelter Crags. To exacerbate this, the Nuttalls only list Crinkle 1, Crinkle 2 (Long Top) and both Shelter Crags summits. I told you it was confusing!

So here's what I think:

- There are FIVE recognised and numbered crinkles, two of these have names - Long Top and Gunson Knott. Long Top is the overall summit and one recognised by both Richards and Wainwright

- Shelter Crags (and Shelter Crags North) are regarded as a separate fell(s)

- On my screenshot below U/I Crinkle #1 is the "prominent rock tower" that Wainwright refers to as being just south of Three Tarns

- U/I Crinkle #2 is nothing, just someone who built a random cairn to confuse idiots like me

I have tried to cross reference the nomenclature below with the DBofBH but it's still unclear. For instance, they list Gunson Knott as the 3rd AND 5th Crinkle (?)

Your thoughts/corrections/criticism welcome!

There are absolutely FIVE Crinkles! And they start with #1 at the southerly end.

Agree with your points 1 and 2. I've got only the two southerly Crinkles plus the two Shelter Crags summits. Looks as if this is the same as the Nuttalls.

Not sure about your points 3 and 4 - may need to go back!

I'm not talking about Wainwright bagging here DT. The "law" (if there is one) is the database of British Hills.

I don't like to tinker with my list too much. I've got a provisional list for the 2016 extended area taking in Whinfell Beacon and Grayrigg Forest ready to go at a suitable time, but wasn't planning to change anything else.

But, as you rightly say, there are five Crinkles ...

I can understand that Tim. It's the same with the Fellrangers, Cicerone are slowly pushing out the the new volumes that take in the extra tops.
